While there are many children who are diagnosed with ADHD each year, the way in which they are diagnosed is not directly correlated with the cause of the condition. Since the role of primary care physicians in diagnosing a child with ADHD is shared with others such as parents and teachers, clinicians can’t simply send the child to receive brain scans with the help of a professional mental health personnel. The reason why this step is important is because the National Institutes for Mental Health â€Å"found that the right prefrontal cortex and at least two of the clusters of nerve cells are significantly smaller in children with ADHD† (US Department of Education 3). The differences between a gifted child’s behavior issues and a child with ADHD is, according to Hartnett, â€Å"situation specific (for gifted children) versus pervasive across settings (ADHD)† (74). Therefore, attaining information from all sources of the child’s life is of utter importance but should only be accounted for one piece of comprehensive evaluation.
